Does anyone have recommendations for a good rice cooker/steamer? Preferably one that's not too big (something that makes 3 cups of rice would be fine).
National. Check. I guess I shouldn't be worrying too much about getting the "best" one. Rob was saying earlier today that rice cookers don't seem to be the most complicated gadgets anyways....
Rice cookers as simple machines?... Ohh.. but I beg to differ... may I direct your attention to the Zojirushi NS-ZCC10 5-Cup Neuro Fuzzy Rice Cooker? The reviews would indicate that it's the best thing ever. The manufacturer describes the machine as as having "Advanced neuro fuzzy® logic technology; multi-menu settings--brown rice, semi-brown rice, sweet rice, mixed rice, porridge and sushi rice; pre-washed rice (rinse free rice) cooking function; easy-to-read wide colored LCD; detachable and washable inner lid; start & completion melody signal; reheating cycle; extended keep warm cycle; stay-cool side handles makes removal of inner cooking pan quick and easy."
Oooo. I especially am intrigued by the "spherical heating system." I do want to get a rice cooker that can handle brown rice well..... Do you know if there is a substantial difference in how different machines deal with different rice?
According to the Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook, which you can "look inside the book and read it's description of different types of rice cookers, there is a difference between the ways that rice cookers handle brown rice. Who knew.
Holy crap! I read through the first few pages of that Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook, and it sounds like what I'm used to (what my mom used) is the cook-and-reduce-heat type. I will now search for one of those in area stores.... ;)
Yeah - my parents use the "Tatung" brand heat and reduce type rice cooker as well. I grew up with one of these in the house. Where to buy them in the United States? I have no idea.
I was thinking about getting the Hello Kitty one earlier today. Actually, thinking of the Hello Kitty one made me think there might be other novelty rice cookers.... I googled "SpongeBob rice cooker" in the hopes of finding a SpongeBob version. But no luck.
