Is anyone else with e-mail notification of comments getting a trickle of old comments today?

Am so close to the end of teaching for this semester I can taste it. I calculated my students grades this afternoon -- all that's left is their final paper that we will score in class tomorrow. By 10 am, I should have those last paper scores inserted into their semester grade sheets and ready to be submitted to the department. Ah.....

I checked out a boatload of books today to prepare for next semester's class. I picked up a collection of Caribbean fabulist fiction and two collections of S.P. Somtow's short stories. And then the other four books I grabbed off the shelf happened to be nearby -- A collection of Roy K. Kiyooka's poetry, an illustrated poem by Joy Kogawa, Connie Willis's To Say Nothing of the Dog, and one of Jenny Sharpe's books.

What's the class?

It's a contemporary literature class that I'm teaching on "fantastic" fiction (encompassing sci-fi, fantasy, magical realism, etc.) as a genre of social critique opposed to social realist writing. There's really not much coherence to the class except that I'm tired of students' ethnographic readings of literature (this story is about how bad the Chinese are to women) and want a chance to dive into stuff that is just totally crazy so that students can't be, like, Japanese people like eating raw fish, or stuff.

Your class sounds awesome.

Remind me at MLA to tell you some of the gendered platitudes that students draw out of henry james.
