I don't know if it's because I'm already a bit on the down side, but I think preparing all these rejection letters at the Press today and logging in new, unpromising proposals has gotten me quite down. Sigh. Seeing all these proposals makes me realize how many people are out there trying to get academic books published, and how many are just completely not interesting at all. The worst part is looking at the c.v.'s and seeing the checkered academic lives of so many people. Seeing some people take ten years to finish a PhD -- granted, I don't know what other things might have intervened in their lives -- is sad. Seeing the long string of adjunct positions is sad. :( After ten years or so of not having a secure academic position, wouldn't you move on to another career? I think I would.
