parental influence
Aug. 27th, 2002 07:58 pmThere is a fiction that parents only structure their child's life to the moment when that child leaves home. There is a fiction that parents let go of attempts to control their child once that child enters "adulthood."
One of the disillusionments of adolescence is realizing that your parents are not omniscient and always correct. For some, this realization is world shattering. They can never confront their parents again. For others, this realization is world altering. They can only see the world as their parents see it, even if this flawed view doesn't allow them to function fully in daily life. And for the lucky few, this realization comes to full fruition in an open dialogue between parents and children as equally unknowing people in the world, struggling to make life worth living, to make life beautiful.
