doctor?

So I'm doing one of those adult things today -- trying to find a doctor to make an appointment for a general checkup and to get some new allergy medicines. I have absolutely no idea how to do this since I've bascially just gone to student health clinics the last ten years. I'm searching through the preferred provider database of my health care plan. And these lists of names and addresses isn't really helpful. Sigh.

Can't you just email around your department for recommendations? That's what a lot of people do. Me, I just let D (the hypochondriac) figure that stuff out. Though even then I haven't gone. Because I hate going to the doctor!

Hmm. I should probably contact people in my department. They're all so.... not like me, though. I guess it doesn't really matter what kind of people they are...

You just want someone who is likely to be good about selecting a doctor! Also, try to ask people who live close to you, because they'll more likely have someone who works more close by, too.

Yah. There are doctors EVERYWHERE in this city. I did a search within 5 miles of my place and the database capped results at 100. I'll probably end up asking some of the younger faculty for recommendations. I just asked one, and she said her husband just found someone he really likes so she'll e-mail me the info.

The other thing you may wish to do is check with the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (google 'em) to get referrals and cross reference their list of providers with your approved list from the insurance folks.

Cools. I couldn't get the referrer database to work, but the site still has some useful info: GLMA.
