file organization?

Does anyone know of any bibliographic software or web services that allow you to construct databases of articles and to link those articles in the program to pdf files on your computer? I sorely need to organize the many journal articles and book chapters I have on my computer in pdfs so that I can find them! Alternatively, how do other people organize such files on their computers? Please help. You're my only hope.
