culling evening
Aug. 4th, 2006 11:00 pmThis evening has been about culling crap from my belongings. Since the move is still a little over a week away, this pass through my stuff is a bit less urgent. I've flitted from pile to pile, from kitchen cabinets to storage closets. I suppose I should try to be more systematic, to work through each pile, boxing up things or throwing them out as I go. But it's so much easier just to sort things generally into "keep" and "discard" piles at this point. I've taken out two garbage bags' worth of trash. AND discovered my car's registration sticker under a pile of paper. Good thing, too, since I should've put this new sticker on two months ago! Oops.
I've got pretty much all my non-dissertation books packed in boxes. I also set aside some books I'll want to have for this coming semester (teaching). Other than that, I really don't have a lot of belongings.... I do have a lot of paperwork to sort through, though. One thing I'm trying to decide right now is if I should hang on to the 100+ rejection letters from this past year's job search. I find some pleasure in gazing on the many, many schools that rejected me. And I like seeing letters "signed" by people whose names I recognize (e.g., Lisa Duggan -- I just mentioned to Rob that I was rejected by the author of Sapphic Slashers and he looked at me confusedly and asked what "sapphic" is LOL). I think maybe I should do some sort of arts/crafts project with all the letters. Maybe a collage to hang on my new office wall.....
