Last night I went to a reading by Allen Say of his new book Kamishibai Man. I love Say so much. And seeing him in person made him even cooler. He doesn't seem to like kids particularly much. I loved the way he didn't really answer anyone's questions, either. He signed a copy of his new book for me and drew a little picture of himself. (He did this for everyone; I'm not special.) Now I really want to sit down with him and do a kind of interview or something for some scholarly journal. I find his work so fascinating because it's so melancholy and rooted in traumatic narratives of displacement, internment, and cultural dislocation.
